The cat is not doing this to annoy or attract attention. Unfortunately, many owners misinterpret this as a behavior problem and it’s one of the main reasons cats are brought to an animal shelter. One possible reason your pet may be doing this is because they might have a urinary tract infection or blockage. If this is the case, the animal will require urgent attention from a veterinarian. It will be painful for the pet to empty the bladder. As a result, they will associate the pain with the box, so you will find that they are eliminating elsewhere.

If your cat has seen a vet and this has been ruled out then you should think about other possible causes. Felines are very sensitive to odors, and if you use a scented litter that could be the problem. Try using a fragrance-free brand and see if that helps. Also, if the cat has been under a lot of stress, this could be the reason the cat isn’t using the litter box. An example would be a recent move, or perhaps the arrival of a new baby in the house.

Felines like privacy. The litter box should be kept in a place away from others, but easily accessible to him or her, especially if it is an older person. As they get older, they can develop arthritis or other problems, so make sure it’s in a place that’s easy to get in and out of. Finally, remember that cat things must be clean. You wouldn’t want to use a dirty bathroom, and neither does your pet.
