Overview

Hounds are an ancient dog breed, and their origin is not entirely known. However, they are known to have been perfected by monks in Belgium. The Normans first brought these dogs to England and the United States. Bloodhounds are hunting dogs, but they love to track more. Seeing that these dogs are bloodhounds, they will quickly lose interest and prefer to follow the scent. These dogs are often used as companion and tracking dogs, especially to track down animals, lost children, and criminals.

Temper

The Bloodhound is a gentle, tolerant, dignified, calm and lovable dog. They love to show affection, and are very good with children. They are good-natured companion dogs that will allow children to climb over them. The Hound is very fond of attention, especially from children. However, children should be taught not to hurt these dogs, as these dogs will not object at all. This breed is full of energy and is very lively, especially when it is still young. These dogs have a tendency to be disobedient, but are generally very tame. Bloodhounds will get along with everyone and welcome guests both wanted and unwelcome without a warm welcome. However, some will bark to let you know when strangers are nearby. They will get along quite well with other dogs and family pets; however, they have a tendency to drool and snore quite a bit. The Bloodhound is capable of chasing any scent, even a human scent. This is a very unusual ability for any dog. These dogs are known to be able to follow trails that are over 100 years old. They will also stay on a trail for 100+ miles because they are so determined. However, these dogs must be fenced, otherwise they will wander off. Most bloodhounds cannot be taken off the leash.

Watch out

The Bloodhound does not require much maintenance, but it is important to clean under the folds of its skin to avoid dry, itchy skin. They should also be brushed frequently to remove excess dead hair, as they can shed a lot depending on the season. This breed has long, drooping ears and must be cleaned frequently to prevent the ears from becoming infected and sore.

Training

The Bloodhound must be trained in a firm manner, but also gently. They can be stubborn, but owners of these dogs must be patient.

It is very important to be consistent when training these dogs as they will know how to get around training because of their pitiful appearance. Although these dogs are not very obedient, they are very calm animals. They will often make their own decisions instead of following the orders of their trainers.

Health problems

Although this is a fairly tough breed, they do have some health conditions that potential owners should be aware of, including hip dysplasia, gastric torsion and elbow dysplasia, inversion of the eyelids, and also excessive skin folds and wrinkles.
