The coffee pods are the original invention of Phillips and Douwe Egberts, a subsidiary of the Sara Lee Corporation. These capsules and the coffee capsule machine in which they are used belong to the trademark of Senseo. They were originally developed to eliminate the need for a separate coffee filter. They are made in the same way as a tea bag. Placed in the receptacle at the top of the pod brew machine, hot water is forced under pressure through the paper pod into a cup that is positioned under the coffee spout. Two of the several specialty blends that Senseo manufactures are the Colombian blend and the Kenyan blend. Senseo’s new generation coffee machine was launched in 2007. There are several changes to the original machine, including an indicator light that tells the user when there isn’t enough water to make two cups of coffee.
