Basic Guide to Gutter Cleaning

DIY gutter cleaning

While gutter cleaning is one of the most unpleasant household chores, you can’t avoid it at all costs. If you love your home and want to keep it from getting damaged, you’ll need to make gutter cleaning a ritual that you do at least twice a year. If you’re afraid of heights or don’t feel up to the task, you can obviously opt for gutter cleaning services at a reasonable cost. However, gutter cleaning is not such a complex job, and if you learn how to clean your gutters properly, you will save money and be able to get the job done easily.

The need for gutter cleaning

Do you know what the effects of not cleaning your gutter can be? Clogged gutters can mess up water drainage and wreak havoc in a number of ways. They can end up seeping into the building, damaging the roof, ruining the outlook, and even seeping into the foundation of your house. Alternatively, the gutter can fill with debris, sand, and leaves, or even create an ice dam on your roof, and you certainly don’t want that; not to mention unwanted guests, ie mosquitoes and bugs. Therefore, to avoid such a mess, it is vital to take steps to clean your gutters at least twice a year.

The cleaning team

If you decide to clean your roof gutter on your own, you need to have the right equipment. Get a trowel to pick up leaves, moss, piled-up debris, and a bucket to transfer it all. Also, you will need a ladder to reach the gutters. Make sure the ladder is placed stably on the ground. Heights can be dangerous, so it would be a good idea if you wear a safety harness, which can be attached to the ceiling when you decide to clean the gutter. When cleaning gutters, wear gloves so you don’t get any infections or allergies when your hands come into contact with bugs or debris in the gutters.

where to start

Know where you are going to start from and figure out how you will continue until the entire gutter is cleaned. Some houses have a set of lower and upper gutters, so you will need to think of a route to clean your gutter efficiently.

Know how to work through gutter cleaning

1.Excavate

It would be better if you start from a drainage outlet and start digging out the debris from that point. As you walk away from the drain outlet, scoop whatever you collect into a bucket.

2. Clear drain pipes

Don’t forget to make sure that the drain pipes are free of obstructions. If they are not clean, try running water through them. If that doesn’t work, use a tool called a plumber’s snake to get the clogged stuff out of the drain pipes.

3. Blast through

Once you have removed all the debris, use a high pressure nozzle to plug the water hose and wash out the gutters leading to the drain outlet. If you find any dirt stuck to the gutter, use a scrub brush to scrape it off.

You are now fully aware of how you can clean your gutters.
