The result of a grilled dish in terms of flavor largely depends on the sauce or marinade you use. While the classic sweet and salty barbecue sauce is amazing, there’s nothing wrong with trying something new. What do you need:

  • 4 tangerines
  • 2 navel oranges
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 package of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon lemon pepper
  • Hot sauce, to taste

Peel the oranges and tangerines, remove the seeds and cut them into segments. Pour the apple cider vinegar into a blender and add the fruits. Blend until mixture is smooth. Continue blending until the mixture is smooth. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic salt, ginger, lemon pepper and hot sauce and continue to pulse slowly until mixture is smooth.

Pour the sauce into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cherry Chipotle BBQ Sauce

What do you need:

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cherries, pitted
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple juice
  • 1/4 cup prepared mustard
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons chipotle powder
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

In a saucepan, melt the butter, then add the onion. Sauté until smooth. Add the garlic and continue cooking for 1 more minute. Remove from heat and pour contents into a blender. Add cherries (thaw first if frozen), tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple juice, mustard, apple cider vinegar, butter, soy sauce, chipotle powder, salsa spice, salt and black pepper.

Puree until mixture is smooth. When ready, transfer the contents into the same saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until desired consistency is reached, about 30 to 40 minutes. Stir from time to time while cooking.
