Metal bunk beds vs wooden bunk beds

When it comes to bunk beds, there are many styles and models to choose from, but which one is best for you? There are many different types of bunk beds to choose from, including twin-over-twin, twin-over-full, full-over-full, ladder, among other types. With that being said, your first decision will have to be between choosing a metal frame or choosing a wood frame.

Most bunk beds were originally made of wood, but manufacturers have recently begun adding a wider selection of metal frames to their repertoire. You will still see that most are made of wood. If you go to a local retail store or shop online, you’ll notice that the selection of metal frames isn’t very large.

So the question is should you choose metal or wood? This depends on multiple factors that you need to consider before making a final decision. The metal frame provides greater support and durability than the wooden frame, however it lacks the traditional look of the iconic bunk bed design. Now, all types of bunk beds can be made of wood or metal, so choosing the type of frame based on style constraints is not a problem. However, each style will have differences depending on the material with which it is constructed.

A metal frame will support more weight than a traditional wood frame, but it also has its flaws. The main problem with the metal frame is that they are not as elegant as the wooden frames. With a wooden frame, you can have many different designs and colors. Unfortunately, most metal bunk beds come in either black or white and most have the same design. The other problem comes from the cold feel of the metal. I for one like my bed to be warm and comfortable so I don’t want to grab onto a cold rail getting out of bed. This is less likely to happen with traditional wooden rails.

However, traditional wooden designs also have their flaws. With age, many begin to wear down and chip. This has the ability to cause irritation and minor scratches. Also, as beds get more and more use over the years, they can start to squeak as the joints loosen, which can also lead to wobbling. However, it is an easy solution to tighten the joint unless they are held together with glue, then it requires a bit more work.

Each type of frame has its pros and cons, it’s really up to the consumer to choose the style and look they want for their bunk bed. Both wood and metal frames will last a long time, but you have to choose between durability and style.
