London 2012 Olympic Games – Tennis

Tennis disappeared from the Olympic arena since the 1924 Games (Paris) since its appearance in the 1896 Games in Athens. The game returned at the 1988 Games in Seoul (64 years later). Tennis lovers have reason to be positively pleased as the event will take place exactly three weeks after the Annual Grand Slam Tennis Tournament.

This year at the London 2012 Summer Olympics, the games will take place from July 28 to August 5. The venue for the tennis matches will be the Wimbledon grass courts. Wimbledon courts have their own history. Wimbledon was the venue for tennis during the 1908 London games. The Great Britain team won all 6 medals that season. This year, there will be 172 tennis players participating in 5 medal events.

There will be five medal events this season. The events are:

• Individual matches for men and women;

• Double matches for men and women, and

• Mixed doubles.

This time, during the London Summer Games, India sent a strong contingent. Indian teams have players with global reputations and the skills to beat the best in the business. They are Somdev De Burman (men’s singles), Mahesh Bhupathi with Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes and Vishnu Pradhan for the men’s doubles, Rushmi Chakraborty and Sania Mirza for the women’s doubles event. Leander Paes will join Sania Mirza for the mixed doubles event. All the Indians are positively happy and hope to see good results in this year’s Olympic Games.

The tennis court measures 23.77 meters long and 8.23 meters wide. The width increases during a doubles match and becomes 10.97 meters. A 0.914 meter net divides the court in two.

The object of tennis is to hit the ball into the opposition’s court in such a way that the opposition cannot return the ball. The scoring system is unique in this game. The points go like 15, 30, 40 and the next point achieved means the set is won. The score of 40 for both sides is called a deuce (push). Deuce can be broken when either one scores two points to win. “Love” means a score of zero in Tennis.

All five tennis events will be played under knockout rules. The winner will move on to the next round and the loser will go home.

There is a referee to oversee each match, while line officials at each end make sure the ball has landed safely. The line referees inform the main referee in case the ball crosses the line. The main referee’s job is to ensure that the match flows freely. The job of a referee is difficult and they should be positively happy with every decision they make.

Tennis matches can go on for hours. Therefore, a player must have great stamina and strength. They also need to have the will to compete in difficult situations. The player must be a good team person and must compete in doubles and mixed doubles events.
