Solid winter pool covers are by far the most common type sold today. They do a good job of protecting a pool during cold weather and retarding algae growth as the weather warms before opening a pool. Unfortunately, improper installation destroys many covers long before they need to be replaced. Improper installation is often the reason. Here’s how to do it right and save money.

Once your pool is drained to the proper level, the lines are turned off, antifreeze and winter chemicals are added, it’s time to cover it. The correct way to install a cover is much the same, whether your pool is above ground or inground. Lay the cover over the top of the pool, making sure the overlay material is even all the way around. Once this is done, put the security hardware in place. For above ground pools, this means running the cable through the loops or grommets and attaching the winch or turnbuckle. For in-ground pools, install the water bags or Aqua Blocks through the retention loops sewn into the cover.

The next step is to form the cover on the sides of the pool around the perimeter. The idea is to place the cover over the pool water to provide support and stay against the sides to prevent wind from coming in underneath. After the cover is in its correct position, take out the garden hose and spray water on the cover to a depth of about one inch. This keeps the lid down. At this point you are almost done. For above ground pools, tighten the cable as tight as possible and place it under the top rail. For in-ground pools, fill the water bags or blocks about two-thirds full with water and make sure they are seated properly.

Tips and tricks:

-Always buy a solid cover with as much overlap as possible. The 3 foot standard. The overlap of the cover on the ground in particular is a bare minimum. Four feet is better. Wind is the worst enemy of a pool cover. The best way to make sure the wind doesn’t destroy a cover prematurely is to have enough overlap to cover more than the top rail. A new product called a cover seal provides great insurance. Essentially a roll of industrial stretch film, the cover seal wraps around the top rail above the cover and down the sides of the pool virtually eliminating any way for wind to get under the cover.

-Air pillows can save you money. Do not use them and you will save.

-Hanging milk jugs on a winter cover is the best way to ensure you replace it right away. The weight of the jars not only puts unnecessary pressure on the lid, but practically invites wind damage.

Installing your winter cover correctly pays dividends. Your cover will last longer and your pool will be easier to open in the spring. This is also the method recommended by winter pool cover manufacturers. Failure to follow their instructions could void your warranty!
