Xactimate Software Training: How to Use the Staircase Tool

When using Xactimate to create a stair, there is really only one option: the stair case tool. This tool seems like an easy to use tool until you really get into things. Then you realize that the simple little tool is actually very complex due to all its components!

So let’s see how to use the tool. Once you have a room in place and want to add a staircase, there is one important thing to remember. A ladder cannot be placed inside a room. Xactimate recognizes a ladder as a separate room, so you need to think about this when building the room that has a ladder. Once you get past this, the tool makes a lot more sense and things become easier.

From one point of view, the last statement is true. Select the ladder you want from the drop down list and then simply place it in the area where you want it. This is true for about ninety percent of the estimates you write.

Once you select the ladder from the dropdown menus and place it on your drawing, don’t think you’re done yet. You must take into account the rest of the components involved in a staircase. Does the stairway go up between two solid walls, does it have a balustrade, does it have a partial wall, is the ceiling sloped or boxed, what are the depths of the treads, how many risers are there? I think you get the point. Any one of these factors can change the entire deal.

Remember, it’s not just about selecting a ladder and putting it in place. The first steps really start when you’re out in the field doing your inspection. Don’t forget to get all the measurements. So if you have to replace a ladder with Xactimate, don’t forget about all the other aspects, especially when you’re doing your reach.
