Resolving the debate: people are inherently good

If you spend any time with those annoying humans, you will notice that they do good things and bad things. No one would want or should discuss that. But the question revolves around why.

Are people who give their time, wealth, or life for a cause secretly selfish? Did they do their good deeds out of fear, thirst for status, spite or hedonism?

(It feels good to give, after all.)

Or are the most twisted, depraved, heinous and evil people motivated by something noble? Something, dare I say, related?

Honestly, I think both are true.

Talk to anyone who fights for a cause or does a lot of charity – they enjoy doing what they do. They may enjoy other things more, but the joy that comes from service is very strong.

As for the nobility that underlies evil:

Take an extremely evil act, something that all sensible people would condemn. Think of someone who burns down an innocent town and laughs it to ashes. It is a brutal act of violence committed by itself.

How can I call this person good when he takes pleasure in this?

The acts are despicable. Never let anyone say otherwise.

But what drives someone to do this?

Perhaps our villain yearns for power. This is a clear demonstration of it, after all.

Maybe they want security for their family. Destroying your ‘enemies’ removes a threat to them.

They may want justice for crimes committed against their own people.

If our villain wants acceptance, he may want to be a hero to his comrades.

Heck, maybe our villain just finds it fun to destroy.

None of these excuse the act. None of these make it ‘okay’ to do evil. But these motivations are inherently worthy. If we all had power, security, justice, acceptance and fun, we would live in a utopia.

Behind every evil act there is a reason. And maybe there is a reason behind that reason. Trace any action back to its ultimate source and you’ll find something good.

That’s why I tell people about self-hypnosis. It brings knowledge and tools to their own psychology. People don’t do evil just because. It’s always because they think it satisfies some value of theirs.

Through the extreme introspection of self-applied trance, you can see how your own mind works. You can contemplate your own values and find the best way to satisfy them.

If you are afraid, you don’t have to attack to feel safe.

If you can’t get respect, you don’t need to resort to crime to earn it.

When the world steals your comfort, you don’t need to steal from your neighbor.

There is always a better way to get what you need. Always. If you consciously can’t see how, then let your unconscious do it.

Your needs are pure, valuable and good. Treat them accordingly and life will become richer, easier and more satisfying.
