Mombasa – The secret hideout of celebrities

It might be the good weather. It could be the white sand, the relaxing feeling of walking barefoot on the beaches. It could also be the ability to shake off the press and have quiet moments to oneself that makes Mombasa such a popular destination for celebrities. Beach sports, both water and land, are available in abundance.

They fly into the country, some on private jets that land directly at Moi International Airport in Mombasa. Unlike the capital Nairobi, Mombasa has few media personalities to be found there, making it an ideal hideaway.

Unlike the highly commercialized reclaimed beaches of the south, Mombasa Beach is natural. The people of Kenya are friendly and hospitable. They have no problem conversing in English, which makes them popular with English speakers around the world.

Celebrities who have quietly visited Mombasa in the recent past include Kenny Rodgers, sisters William Serena and Venus, Oprah Winfrey, and many movie stars. Most of them prefer to come at quiet times and are reported on by the local media long after they are gone.

Bill Gates has also had his quiet moments in Mombasa. But supermodel Naomi Campbell does something different. She has a house in Malindi that she visits every year. She appreciates the Kenyan coast and its hospitable people and therefore she never misses her appointment in Kenya.

Quality accommodation is available here, even for the most luxurious. Budget travelers also have a wide variety of hotels and lodges to choose from.

What makes Mombasa so popular? There is something for everyone. For nightlife lovers, there are numerous nightspots to choose from. The sound of enchanting African music with live bands that can take you all over the world of music in one night is irresistible.

The city has an excellent climate and it is possible to sunbathe ten months a year. Even the cooler months of June and July can bring sunny mornings that are lovely for busking, as always. Kenya is located on the equator and therefore does not experience extreme changes in weather patterns.

For history buffs, the city is rich in historical sites. From the famous fort Jesus inside the city to the Gedi ruins, an hour’s drive to Kilifi. Mombasa also serves as a base for the traveler who wants to sample Kenya’s world-famous wildlife. The vast Tsavo National Park is only a four hour drive away.

Africa has many lovely destinations, but none compare to Mombasa when it comes to taking things easy and enjoying moments of personal tranquility.
