Green Amethyst – Prasiolite – Properties and Meaning

Green Amethyst – Prasiolite is becoming very popular lately due to its visual appeal and aggressive promotional marketing by the jewelry industry. However, the green amethyst is not that different from its relative, the purple amethyst. In fact, artificial prasiolite is produced almost exclusively from purple amethyst, which is why this gemstone is sometimes referred to as green amethyst. This name reflects the production process: some amethyst crystals when heated to several hundred degrees change their color to green instead of yellow (which would normally be expected). The green color of prasiolite can vary from a pale yellowish green to shades of deep green. When it has some characteristic shades of green, prasiolite can easily be combined with some more expensive gemstones. The correct amethyst specimens used to produce green amethyst come mainly from Minas Gerais in Brazil. Prasiolite is silica, silicon oxide, the same structural composition as ordinary amethyst and ordinary rock crystal, quartz. It is therefore not surprising that this gemstone has a strength of 7 on the Moh’s mineral hardness scale, making it suitable for jewelry making, cutting and polishing.

Some crystals get their green color in natural processes and this is why natural genuine green amethyst prasiolite can also be found, although not as often. Therefore, from the above we can say that Prasiolite is a relatively rare gemstone. The name prasiolite comes from the Greek name for leek – “prasos” and the extension “litos” – meaning stone.

As a general rule, the metaphysical and healing properties of green amethyst are similar to those of ordinary amethyst, enhanced by its elegant green color. Green is one of the colors of the heart, but also the color of Nature, of consecration and concentration. The green color also helps to relieve tension and irritation. It symbolizes self-esteem and well-being. Green amethyst is the foundation for both the heart and the mind. Its energy is of paramount importance for self-realization and inner peace, but it also helps to bridge the gap between the physical and metaphysical aspects of life. The soft calming green color of Green Amethyst soothes and heals any wounds accumulated within our emotional body. It can act on the triple internal natural organization of man: emotional, mental and on volitional processes. Some people say that it can strengthen peace and calm, and bring generosity and growth. It also promotes balance and harmony in the mental body.

People who have learned green jewelry are generally well adjusted. One must also consider the fact that we are able to detect many shades of green, far more than any other color. Therefore, it is recommended to wear green amethyst when you prefer to achieve balance in your emotions, if you experience that you need to increase energy, or if you need to awaken favorable feelings or calm harmful emotions. Green amethyst can help achieve healthy relationships.

When cleaning green amethyst, running water and a soft brush should be used. Chemical means are not needed. The only thing to be careful about is not to expose prasiolite jewelry to heat or sunlight, as the color may change. This stone can only be scratched by harder stones (7 or higher on the Moh’s scale), so it should be kept separate from other jewelry items.

Green amethyst is a birthstone for people born in February.
