[Chinese Restaurant Review] Foo Kee Seafood Restaurant, Flushing

When is a “B” the second best score you can get? When it comes to Foo Kee Seafood Restaurant! As in achieving the second highest rating ever given by The Chinese Quest! For the other reason you might get a “B”, you’ll just have to check out our Twitter feed, @TheChineseQuest.

After a two-month hiatus, in the winter that will seemingly never end in the New York City metro area, the Mees are back on the road tonight. Taking special note of Mee Tsu Yan’s delicate gut strength, or lack thereof at the moment, we deliberately chose a Chinese restaurant of the Cantonese variety.

Once again in search of the best Chinese restaurant, we ventured back across the border from Nassau to Flushing, New York. At this point, we should consider rating Flushing restaurants on a different scale than Long Island restaurants, as it’s becoming apparent that Flushing restaurants now hold four of the top five spots in our Search to find the best. Best Chinese restaurant in all of, umm, Long Island. .

Our destination was:

Foo Kee Seafood Restaurant

136-14 Avenue 38

Flushing, New York 11354

Our special guest tonight was the Right Honorable Mee Har Vee, a world-renowned wine connoisseur, or sommelier, a bon vivant, and a very nice guy. A true mensch, if we ever met one. A character. And boy do we know characters!

Darren was our host. I get that the guy could have been in vaudeville! And what better way to strike a chord with a Jew than by being funny and personable. We were in for a real treat (which for sure, the “B” grade the Board of Health gave the restaurant, our minds are at ease).

We left the ENTIRE order to him…and we left the wine selection to Mee Har Vee…more on that later.

When Darren (we’re not quite sure if that’s his real name or a stage name) brought out three appetizers that included our staple of pork ribs (sort of), crispy peking duck (yum-mee) and a side dish of crispy chicken, our meal got off to a great start.

It was accompanied by the first of five Mee Har Vee wine selections, called “Seven Daughters”. Now that there were six of us, we were a bit confused. What was the extra daughter doing at our table? He then explained that the Seven Daughters represented the seven different grapes that were blended to make this delicious white wine. Four other wines were served. I’m beyond what they were called. By then I was… um, back to review.

So, after the appetizers had settled nicely in our stomachs, it was time for Darren (that’s his name, right?) to recommend our entrees. There were four or five spectacular options served with incredible sauces. Nothing spicy. But, very succulent.

My favorite was the five pound lobster in ginger garlic sauce.

There was a cube of steak (kew?)… melted in your mouth. Scallops that were like butter. Another chicken dish, and house special fried rice.

Being a true, authentic Chinese restaurant, there were no fortune cookies served for dessert (sorry, you’ll have to pick your lottery numbers elsewhere), but the sweetest, juiciest oranges I’ve tasted in a long, long time.

There are literally hundreds of Chinese restaurants you can go to in Flushing. This is one that you surely do not want to miss.

Humbly presented for your consumption,
