Life is short – enjoy driving

Is there anything more complex than the modern automobile? Is there anything more difficult to quantify than the perfect balance between ride and handling? Does it matter?

Despite our fixation on 0-60 strokes, huge horsepower, huge tires, these aren’t always the most satisfying cars to drive on a daily basis. For those of us who have a commute and other bills to pay, I have a few suggestions:

1. Buy used and buy at least 3 years. Most cars have already depreciated 30-40% at this point.

2. Buy something light. Better fuel economy, longer tire life, and more efficient use of horsepower. Most light cars will also have a better feel on the road, they will be nimble and easy to park.

3. Don’t buy the biggest one because you could use it. Driving a truck or SUV because you move a table once a year will cost you thousands of additional dollars over the life of the vehicle.

Here are some late-model car suggestions that are practical, fun to drive, and can be had for under $ 10,000:

2004-2007 Scion xB – I know the style is polarizing, but try one and then decide if you like it. It has the cargo space of an SUV, perfect for camping or driving with your friends (or your carpool). The engine is full of life (with a manual transmission at least), it has a great steering feel, and the great mileage and inexpensive insurance should keep you happy for a long time to come.

1999-2005 Mazda Miata – There’s a good reason this is the best-selling sports car of all time, because it’s just as much fun to drive as anything else, at any price. No, it won’t provide the excitement of a Ferrari, but for driving down the street, it’s as good as it sounds. It’s not the fastest car out there, but the handling and braking are outstanding, and it can make a trip to the grocery store feel special. Drop the lid, and if you go.

2002-2006 Acura RSX: The mechanical twin of the Civic Si, this is an excellent car that will last a long time. This is one of the most elegant ways to enjoy the safety and reliability of a Honda, and a used one will retain its value for a long time.
