How to make seashell candles

Collecting seashells along the beach is a favorite summer activity for children. Take it one step further by transforming your seaside treasures into beautiful decorations or party favors for kids. This easy seashell candle craft shows you how.

When you’re done, scatter seashell candles on your party table along with other beach favors like starfish and sand dollars. The larger shells can be used as unique centerpieces or accent pieces in the bedroom or bathroom.

The perfect souvenir for a themed party by the sea.

What you will need:

  • paraffin stick
  • wicks
  • metal wick holder
  • Double boiler with pouring lip
  • shells
  • pieces of colored candles

Most of these items can be found at your local craft store. If you can’t find metal wick holders, remove the wicks from cheap tea lights. Use colored candle butts to make candles in various shades.

Method:

Clean the shells in a 10% bleach solution. Rinse with cold water and allow to dry.

Cut the paraffin block into smaller pieces with a sharp knife. Melt them in the top of the double boiler by heating the water below over low heat. Use the paraffin as is, or you may want to add bits of colored wax for different color combinations. This is a great way to use up old candle ends. Experiment with color mixtures, but remember that the wax will be one shade darker when dry.

Cover a stable surface with plastic or newspaper. Balance one of the shells in a small cup and slowly pour in the melted wax. Immediately place the wick and wick holder in the center of the casing. Allow the wax to cool for at least 30 minutes so that all of the wax hardens completely.

Light and enjoy your beautiful seashell candles!
