Choosing your maternity clothes and nursing bras

Maternity & Nursing Bras

When shopping for a prenatal bra, make sure the bra fastens on the tightest hook to ensure room for growth. A cleavage is definitely out of the question and there should be no bulges under the arm. If your bra is putting pressure on your developing mammary glands then it can cause a blockage in your glands and this can lead to a painful condition known as mastitis. This is the reason why underwire bras are not normally recommended during pregnancy.

There are 2 main bra styles to choose from: the traditional hook back or the crop top. Each person prefers a certain style for different reasons and you won’t know if it’s right for you until you try it on. Either way, the crop top style will obviously be more comfortable to wear at night.

If you intend to breastfeed, you will need to purchase your nursing bras in the last month of your pregnancy, anytime after 36 weeks. Again, try to fit properly, making sure your nursing bra is adjusted to the loosest setting to allow you to adjust the bra as it returns to its pre-pregnancy shape. Choose an opening that allows easy access to each breast, such as a drop cup.

Maternity clothes

Your maternity wardrobe is small compared to your usual wardrobe, so while you might wear a certain item of clothing from your main wardrobe maybe once a week, a certain pair of maternity pants could be in the wash or out. In other words, your maternity wardrobe gets a real hammering as it’s constantly worn from the time you’re about 20 weeks pregnant until a few months after the baby is born. Therefore, it is worth investing in a few items that you love. Look for a specialty store where the staff is knowledgeable and can give you tips on how to shop wisely.

From form-fitting dresses to high-waisted blouses over panelless pants, today’s designs let you stay who you are. Having a little ‘alien’ take over your body is hard enough without it also taking over your fashion sense! Showing your bulge isn’t for everyone, but wearing tighter clothing can have a slimming effect. Try on many different stunt styles and find yourself again!

When shopping for a top, always make sure it fits properly across the shoulders and bust. When shopping for pants or a skirt, check how your buttocks and thighs look. When buying a dress, it’s all your parts!
