waking up with a headache

No matter when or where it occurs, headaches are one of the most common ailments. You’ll be in the middle of something and your head will start to hurt. Maybe it’s just a little sore in your forehead or maybe it feels like someone dropped a hammer on the top of your head, either way it’s annoying if it’s happening to you. Of course, one of the worst times to get a headache is when you wake up in the morning.

What causes headaches?

A headache is pain found in the head or neck. There are three basic types of headaches, primary, secondary and facial pain. Primary headaches are caused by tension. Migraine is considered a primary headache. Secondary headaches are caused by things such as bleeding in the brain and tumors, while facial pain headaches occur in the neck or due to nerves in the brain.

There are many reasons why they occur. One of the most familiar reasons is stress. If you find yourself in a particularly difficult situation and you’re not quite sure how it will turn out, the stress will usually kick in and so will the headache. In fact, any stressful situation can cause a headache.

So what would cause a headache in the morning?

When most people think of a headache in the morning, they think of a hangover or having too much to drink the night before, and that would certainly lead to a headache. But there are also other reasons. Surprisingly, you may be dehydrated. Your body needs a lot of water every day, and sadly, a good number of people don’t drink a lot of water. Water is good for you not only for headaches with other things too. Another related problem is drinking too much caffeine at night, which causes you to make too many trips to the bathroom when you’re supposed to sleep. Another bad thing about caffeine is that it will keep you awake when you should be sleeping, and in the morning you’ll probably need another dose to chase away the headaches.

Have you ever had trouble sleeping, because that can cause headaches in the morning? Lack of sleep and not being able to fall asleep can be very stressful, which in turn will lead to headaches when you wake up.

A sleep disorder that is not very common but is a big problem for those who suffer from it is bruxism or teeth grinding. Grinding your teeth tenses up the muscles in your face while you’re trying to sleep, and as you’ve probably guessed, this could give you a huge headache in the morning.

There are quite a few things that can cause headaches when you wake up in the morning, if this becomes a recurring tendency for you, then seek help from your doctor.
