Staycations: A DIY Getaway

If you’re like most people, the end of January is the time of year when you go a little crazy. Seemingly endless snowstorms, extreme temperatures, and, let’s face it, post-holiday blues, all combine to create an overwhelmingly gloomy mood. It’s the perfect time to change the atmosphere in your home with an easy and profitable vacation. Unlike typical getaways, this one requires little to no travel. With a little creativity, you and your loved ones will soon see those backwards frowns!

See the sights
Are you guilty of living in an area rich in history and culture that you have never explored? We constantly travel here, there, everywhere to visit famous museums, restaurants, and cities, neglecting the ones in our own backyards! It’s a no-brainer, but try to check out local deals near or within your city. Do some research and compile a must-see list, including activities for both family and adults. This is your chance to finally see that steakhouse to die for or let your inner child play at the local rock-climbing wall or pottery class.

Go ‘Natural’
We’re not talking about giving up deodorants and shampoos, but do it means taking time to appreciate the scenery around you. Are there nearby parks that your family can easily get to? The lush landscaping not only offers stunning views, but is also guaranteed to have a belly full of laughter as everyone tries to roll down the hill. Or visit a park or farm that offers guided trail rides. If you’re lucky and plan ahead, you might even see the sunset while riding a horse! For out-of-this-world fun, bring a telescope, blankets and apple cider in a thermos and go stargazing. Check the weather beforehand to pick the clearest night; prepare to be surprised!

beat the boredom
If the weather is a little less than nice, don’t worry! There are plenty of activities to do indoors without going anywhere. Discover the family’s favorite board games. Sound too boring for teenagers? Try blending classic card games into one ultimate game where scores carry over from day to day; the champion of the weekend chooses his favorite food for dinner the following week!

Attend a home premiere
You don’t have to be an A-list celebrity to do this event! Turn your family room into an intimate home theater! Rent the movies you’ve been wanting to see and create a double feature that everyone will enjoy. Rearrange the furniture so there are two rows of capes or chairs for everyone to sit on. Make sure you have plenty of popcorn, candy, and soda ready!

make aromas
Did you know that certain scents affect your mood? So even if you can’t change your location or participate in a stay, you they can change your mood Let’s face it, even the thought of a rotten banana makes you wrinkle your nose! Try your hand at aromatherapy to give your family an instant boost. To de-stress a room, try scents like citrus, ylang ylang, sandalwood, and rose. To awaken and invigorate the senses, eucalyptus, ginger and peppermint work wonders. Finally, to calm someone down and achieve a deep, peaceful sleep, try lavender, vanilla, and chamomile. A few drops on a pillowcase or handkerchief will suffice. Or for a constant fresh scent, for essential oil in a diffuser. Take a deep breath and relax!
