Eat this and live! By Don Colbert, MD

“Eat this and live!” by Don Colbert, MD is a guide on how to make simple food choices to lead a healthier lifestyle. It’s an easy-to-read book with plenty of full-color photos, sidebars, nutritional information, and a wealth of practical tips on healthy eating. I enjoyed reading it, and while many of the tips and advice were familiar to me from reading and living a healthy lifestyle, I enjoyed this book and found it helpful as we continue to try to eat healthy.

If you are familiar with Dr. Con Colbert, you will know that he wrote the New York Times best-selling book, “The Seven Pillars of Health,” as well as “Toxic Relief” and the Bible Cure series. Colbert includes some Biblical references in this book, but not many. Its main focus is food choices for health.

Talk about live food vs. dead food, how your body is a temple and what the Bible says about food in the first three chapters of the book. From then on, it’s about foods and what foods to avoid and what foods to eat.

Write very clearly and explain why to avoid or why to eat certain foods. Distinguish between foods that you recommend never eating and those that you should eat with caution. Drinks and what to drink are also included.

There are even sections on shopping, food storage and preparation, smart options when dining out (including specific dishes that are healthier at certain restaurants like Subway, Quiznos, Outback Steakhouse, Red Lobster, Applebee’s, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Perkins and Some However, keep in mind that there are only a couple of approved selections in some of these places, and the book does not have a complete list of foods that are served in restaurants) and tips for healthy kids. It really is a great book on how to eat nutritiously and stay healthy. The colorful design makes it more interesting to read than plain black and white text, and the sidebars and extras were interesting and useful.

Overall, it’s just a great book for anyone who wants to eat more nutritious food to feel better and live longer. I plan to check it out every now and then as it helps plan healthy meals for our family. Because really, no matter how good a book is, the key is to follow Colbert’s advice to eat better, feel better, and live longer.
